We often lie to ourselves and offer up excuses as to why we can't exercise. Well, what is exercise? Do we need a gym? No. Do we need weights? No. Do we need an hour or even 30 minutes to workout? Nope, nope, nope!
There are infinite lies that can lead us to a sedentary life, but it's up to us to believe them...or not! My hope is that this community will help one another expel those lies and keep each other accountable to living healthier each day. What do you need personally, to keep yourself committed to moving, exercising, and working out daily? Please comment below and share your struggles. We are here for you!

There are studies about almost everything these days, for good or for ill. There was a particular study done by a Professor Gail Matthews from Dominican University of California, which discovered that people are 20% more successful accomplishing their goals if the goals are written down and 40% more successful if one create "actionable results". The findings prove the quote by Antonie de Saint-Exupery that "a goal without a plan is just a wish." What is one goal you want to achieve? Have you written it down yet? If not, I challenge you to do both today! Leave a goal in the comments below and you will have accomplished the mission!
Make a great day!! Wrestling is a grueling sport and there is a quote that floats around among coaches that goes something like wrestling is "80% mental and 20% physical." While it's impossible to know the exact %, the point is that a big share of the work (or anything that is really hard to do) is largely in our minds. Certainly, the physical part of a sport or exercise can be tough. But it's safe to say that once you "show up" to your workouts...things go much easier. So, if we can resolve to have a mindset that will at the very least "show up" then we've already conquered a LOT! So...the next time you entertain whether to exercise or not, try just showing up and see where that takes you. Slow and steady wins the race!
There are multitudinous reasons that strength training is needed for older adults. Below is a list of just 10, but there are more!! My book will outline them...and it's coming soon Make a great day everyone!!
Strength Training + Good Nutrition = Great Health! But what are some of the more "optimal" foods that will help build lean muscle? Here they are...
Only about 30% of the characteristics of aging are genetically determined. The other 70% are linked to lifestyle! GIVE ME STRENGTH!! Have a good evening...don't forget to hydrate.
Happy Monday everyone!! Hope you had a fantastic weekend.
Exercise isn't always fun, but it's always important. Sometimes we just want to skip. But if you can "show up" and do something...anything to increase your movement, even just if it's just in a small incremental way, then do it! If you can do one thing today, what would it be? Climbing some stairs? A walk around the block? Marching in place? Is anyone exercising today? If so, please add a comment "yes" in this post. If you need encouragement, please let us know! Now...go out there and "make a great day"!! Growing up with a native Michigander in the family (my mom Nancy Menchinger Case), we'd often make summer trips around the bend of Lake Michigan into the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area to visit our relatives (Shirley Zick and company). I have such fond memories of that area and one of them is picking giant blueberries that grew amazingly well in that climate and type of soil there. We'd load up with pints upon pints to bring back to Wisconsin, to make jam, to put on our shredded wheat, and to make an occasional blueberry pie! I blueberries...and so now do our kiddos!!
Not surprisingly, recent studies have now shown that blueberries are excellent in combatting bone loss and collagen loss. There was also a 6-year study done on over 16,000 people that discovered blueberries and strawberries delay cognitive aging by up to 2.5 years. And another study discovered how blueberries are remarkable in helping reduce muscle damage after exercise. If you want to dig more into the benes, here is a good article that offers 10!! Now get to your local supermarket and stock up on some blueberries! They're arguably one of the best snacks, especially for seniors. Have a great weekend! Read the Article This article was shared with me a few months ago by Nancy Menchinger Case. It is now the first source mentioned in my upcoming book Give Me Strength. The study (by Cleveland Clinic) in the article presents a serious consequence of not exercising. If you're not currently exercising, PLEASE start. This article should provide a wake-up call to us and our loved ones.
